On Monday May 20th, 2013 at 10:15 am the
Allendale Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to Franklin Turnpike in the
area of Nadler Court for a container in the roadway that appeared to be
smoking. Upon arrival of Chief 930 it was initially established that it was a solution
of hydrogen chloride and what appeared to be smoke was the product of the
solution reacting with the moisture in the roadway. At that time Mahwah Company
2 Hazmat was requested to assist with the situation. The Rescue arrived to
assist with confirming the substance in the warm zone. Engine 932 initially set
up a blockade so that no traffic would come down into the scene and once Hazmat
2 neutralized the solution the engine crew washed down the roadway. Bergen
County Hazmat also responded and assisted.

Throughout the month of March members of AVFD have been working hard training and discussing truck company operations and the significance of its aspects while operating at many different types of emergency incident. Spear headed by Lieutenant Rubino, he has worked diligently with Captains Andersen and Stricker to establish the department's truck company operations as the second due apparatus to any fire-matic emergencies in the borough. The first couple weeks drill nights consisted of round table discussions and the objectives of the first due truck on a fire scene. From there the officers taught the newer members the main tools and equipment that would be used in this sort of operation. Furthermore everything was brought together when the department held a roll-in response drill at one of the schools in town. As the months progress the department will continue to focus on more and more specific aspects of the fire service and how we at AVFD can improve our professional operations.&nb...
